The impact of transformation on this kitchen was
substantial—even with minimal structural remodeling. In their
previous space (see before pictures) it was nearly impossible for
these owners to do what they love: Cook and Entertain.
Spatial transformation: The wall dividing the formal dining
space and kitchen was shortened and converted into a serving
area. Cabinetry was added on both sides of the new serving area
ensuring
the preservation of storage. Appliances were re-arranged allowing
room for a pantry.
Functional transformation: These owners gained
a buffet counter with the added benefit of a beautiful view
to the back terrace.
The cook top was shifted to the right giving way to more
landing space in the island. Additionally, the island was
enlarged and elongated. A knee space was added for the cook
who likes to sit
while creating
her masterpieces. For convenience, a warming draw was integrated
into the existing drawer stack.
The single pantry by the kitchen table was upgraded to a multi
use tower with cookbook display/storage, letter holders, and
a functional place for telephone and phone book.
Transforming
the look: The transformation
of lighting came through the addition of indirect lighting
on the cabinet tops and direct “task” lights below the wall
cabinets. The structural lowering of the dining wall added more natural
light to the space.
Transforming color: The color palette is warm and earthy. Cabinets
of natural cherry in a slab door fit the style of the entire
house and repeated the warm look of the redwood ceilings. The
refrigerator was integrated with wood panels that matched the
cabinetry—a
very nice touch. To add dimension, the accent cabinetry of the island
was created in an antique ivory finish with a shaker door. Creamy
Raffia Corian with full height coved back splash made for an impressive
main countertop. Coordinating outlet and switch plate covers continue
the clean look of the space. Additional notable features are the
integrated Corian sink and custom drain board in this solid surface
counter.
To add a splash of color and personality, a uniquely veined
piece of granite runs through the center island buffet. The
granite color used here, Dakar Green, consists of a mossy
green, cream, black,
and rose quartz combination. Hardware and fixtures bring
it all together in a black matte finish.
Transforming the way they live: The beautiful new surfaces
are easy to clean and well-planned storage makes organization
effortless. Now the homeowners can both prepare meals and
entertain their friends
in a new and wonderfully inviting place.
